Demystifying Children's Publishing

Are you a new writer, especially a writer of colour and/or under-represented in the industry? Then you will find publishing often opaque. But you can wipe away the opacity and find the handle to that door and open it, if you're willing to put in the hours.

As someone who broke into children's publishing an immigrant and an outsider, one thing is true - children's publishing is very friendly and supportive. Writers and illustrators help and boost each other and there is some light in this tunnel.

In 2020, during the lockdown, I was invited to talk about children's publishing to writers of colour. It was organised by Take Flight Hub, a new professional and creative development programme for emerging Black and Asian writers. It is a collaboration between University College London (UCL), Spread the Word and Words of Colour.
